Indische klassische Musik gehört als Form improvisierter Musik weltweit zu den komplexesten Traditionen. Ihr melodischer Reichtum (Raga) in Verbindung zur Ornamentik hat eine tiefe introspektive Wirkung; Poly-Rhythmen (Tala) machen sie zugleich meditativ und ekstatisch. Einzigartig ist die Teilung der Oktave in 22 verschieden große Mikrointervalle. Der international erfolgreiche Sitarist Hindol Deb beherrscht in seinen Interpretationen Raga in seiner Ursprünglichkeit. Er konzertierte u.a. in der Carnegie Hall, im großen Saal der Alten Oper Frankfurt (übertragen auf ARTE) und kooperierte mit Marcus Stockhausen und Marina Abramović.

In a typical Indian Classical performance the artist chooses the Raga on the spot depending on his/her own mood in connection with the immediate environment. The performance begins with a non rythmic slow Improvisation called ‘Alaap’ gradually getting into rhythmic improvisation called ‘Jod’. The 2nd half of the performance starts as a duo with the percussionist to play compositions in different rhythmic cycles and improvise in different ways gradually increasing the speed. The end comes with high energy fast strumming of the drone strings called ‘Jhala’ to lift the energy to a culminating point. The Conclusion of the performance comes with a short sweet melodic composition to bring back the energy to a stability.
